A reconstitution device (10) for storing a first component of a pharmaceutical preparation includes a receptacle (12), a cap (24) having a first end (26) secured to the receptacle, a second end (28), and an inner bore (58) having a central aperture (62). The device further includes a stopper (18) located between the receptacle and the cap, the stopper (18) including a portion capable of being perforated. The device also includes a plunger (38) secured to the second end (28) of the cap (24), a locking mechanism (64) located in the cap, and an actuating mechanism. The actuating mechanism may prevent the device from inadvertent activation.
