The present invention relates to a composition for preventing or treating depression or anxiety comprising hispidol as an active component. Hispidol of the present invention exhibits an effect of selectively, reversibly, and competitively inhibiting monoamine oxidase type A (MAO-A), which is associated with the development of depression and anxiety； and also has little cytotoxicity, thereby being able to be safely used in pharmaceutical or food compositions for preventing or treating depression or anxiety.본 발명은 히스피돌(hispidol)을 유효성분으로 포함하는 우울증 또는 불안증의 예방 또는 치료용 조성물에 관한 것으로, 본 발명의 히스피돌은 우울증과 불안증의 발병과 연관이 있는 모노아민 산화효소 A형(MAO-A)의 활성을 선택적, 가역적, 및 경쟁적으로 저해하는 효과를 나타내며, 세포독성이 거의 없으므로, 우울증 또는 불안증을 예방 또는 치료하기 위한 약학적 또는 식품 조성물에 안전하게 사용할 수 있다.
