The system 10 includes a handle assembly 20 having an enclosed locking mechanism (not shown), and a stylus 60, a cannula 70, and a tracking device 100 extending from the handle assembly 20. The 5 stylus 60 includes undercuts for receiving pins of the locking mechanism. A cam of the handle assembly can rotate between a first position in which the pins of the locking mechanism are engaged with the undercuts and in a second position in which the pins of the locking mechanism are disengaged therefrom releasing the stylus 60 from the locking mechanism. The stylus 60 is engaged in a slidable fashion with an inner diameter of the 10 cannula 70. In some arrangements, the handle assembly 20 includes a quick connect system that in a first position attaches the cannula 70 to the handle assembly 20 and in a second position releases the handle assembly 20 and thus stylus 60 from the cannula 70.
