A therapeutic applicator is positioned using a positioning system that includes a passive positioning assembly and an active positioning assembly. Each assembly has multiple degrees of freedom. The passive positioning assembly sets, with respect to a base of the system, an initial forward-backward position of the active positioning assembly, an initial vertical position of the active positioning assembly, and an initial angle of tilt of the of the active positioning assembly. The active positioning system sets an axial position of the therapeutic applicator and a rotational position of the therapeutic applicator.
