The implantable orthopedic assembly has one or more clamp assemblies for securing the occipital bone plate and stabilizing rod to the plate. When unlocked, the clamp assembly can be repositioned laterally and rotationally along the support rail. Locking occurs when the stabilizing rod is secured to the clamp assembly. The rod exerts a force on the locking component and causes the locking component to exert a force against the support rail. This force pulls the clamp assembly base surface into contact with the rail and effectively locks the clamp assembly base into a fixed position.
