A hip protector 1 for protecting a user in the event of a fall comprises one or more hip protection elements 10 arranged to reduce the impact of a fall and an electronic fall detection system 12 configured to detect the occurrence of said fall and to store fall data defining one or more characteristics of said fall in a data store for later retrieval. The hip protection element preferably comprises a cushion or pad in which the fall detection system may be located. The defined characteristics may comprise one or more of impact data, direction data or timestamp data. The fall detection system preferably includes a fall sensor, which may comprise an accelerometer (18, figure 2) or a tilt switch. Also disclosed is a hip protector 1 comprising one or more hip protection elements 10 and a fall detection system 12 including an accelerometer (18, figure 2) to generate movement data, said fall detection system being configured to monitor said movement data for a predetermined time period and generate an alarm signal on determining that a user is immobile. A method of monitoring falls of an elderly or infirm person is disclosed.
