Sanitary towels, incontinence pads or napkins (diapers) are provided with flanged upstanding elasticised leakage guards 44, 46 extending on either side of the crotch region and from the front of the pad to the rear of the pad. The longitudinal folds in the pad for packaging extend from the front of the pad to the back of the pad and are situated on or between the flanges 76, 80, 78, 82 of the upstanding leakage guards when the pad is opened out. The figure shows the fold extending through the outer flange of the leakage guards so that when the pad is opening out the outer flange projects upward at the angle theta or theta&rsquo.
