PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material surface modification method that is simple, has a wide material selection property, and has a safe biological property, and that is used for chemically modifying a surface of material comprising metal, resin or ceramic using a functional compound.SOLUTION: There is provided the material surface modification method in which a surface of material comprising metal, resin or ceramic is chemically modified using a functional compound. The material surface modification method includes a step of bringing a functional compound having a hydroxyphenyl group into contact with material comprising metal, resin or ceramic under the presence of a catalyst and an oxidant.
