1. A nucleic acid containing a nucleotide sequence that encodes a coding sequence for an RdCVF protein, where the sequence encoding RdCVF contains a transcoded nucleotide sequence. The nucleic acid of claim 1, wherein the RdCVF protein is an RdCVF1.3 protein. The nucleic acid of claim 1, wherein the RdCVF protein is an RdCVF2.4 protein. The nucleic acid of claim 1, wherein the RdCVF protein is a short version of the RdCVF protein. The nucleic acid of claim 1, wherein the RdCVF protein is a long version of the RdCVF protein. The nucleic acid of claim 1, wherein the RdCVF protein is a human RdCVF protein. The nucleic acid according to claim 1, wherein the initial methionine codon is missing in the encoded nucleotide sequence. The nucleic acid of claim 1, wherein the coding sequence for the RdCVF protein comprises nucleotides 106-741 from SEQ ID NO: 1, nucleotides 106-429 from SEQ ID NO: 1, nucleotides 106-432 from SEQ ID NO: 3, or nucleotides 106- 744 of SEQ ID NO: 3.9. The nucleic acid of claim 1, further comprising a second coding region for the N-terminal signal sequence operably linked to the coding sequence for the RdCVF protein. The nucleic acid of claim 9, wherein the signal sequence is selected from the group consisting of an Igk signal sequence, human growth hormone (HGH), neurotrophic factor derived from the brain (BDNF), insulin growth factor 1 (IGF-1), and β- glucuronidase (GUSB) .11.
