A fundus camera obtaining a favorable image with effective automatic alignment comprises a photographing optical system (10,30) having an optical axis (L1), directing illumination light to a fundus using a ring slit (17b) and photo-receiving the light, an alignment target projection optical system (50) , an alignment target detection optical system (60) comprising a photodetector (65), and means (80) for detecting alignment deviation direction and amount of the photographing system with respect to a reference working distance in a back/forth direction based on a photodetector signal, characterized by means (80) for setting a first alignment permissible range applying when the photographing system is deviated forward and a second range applying when deviated backward, regarding a working distance of the photographing system with respect to the eye with which the slit is placed at a position conjugate with a pupil as the reference distances, the first range narrower than the second range.
