The invention relates to a novel process for the preparation of indazole, compound of formula (I) and to intermediates thereof, the process comprising . (a) reacting indazole compound (V) with dithio-2,2-bis(N-methylbenzamide compound (IV) in the presence of copper catalyst and a suitable ligand to form compound (II) Formula II wherein R1 is an activated substituent group, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl or heteroaryl, or a group of the formula CH=CHR3 or CH=NR3, where R3 is a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, heterocycloalkyl, aryl, or heteroaryl and R2 is H, or protecting group wherein X is an activated substituent group and (b) converting compound (II) into compound (I).
