The current invention concerns a device and a method for the abortive or preventive treatment of a headache via external trigeminal nerve stimulation, in particular transcutaneous non-invasive electrical trigeminal stimulation via consecutive pulses. The pulses comprise a pulse repetition frequency of between 0.5 and 50 kilohertz； a pulse width of between 1 and 500 microseconds； and a pulse amplitude of between 0.1 and 200 milliampere.
