A cannula includes an instrument valve housing and a valve assembly disposedwithinthe instrument valve housing. The valve assembly includes a seal assemblyhaving at least oneseal member including a ring portion and a septum seal extending across thering portion. Thevalve assembly further includes a guard assembly and a centering mechanism.The guardassembly includes a plurality of guard members. Each guard member includes aring portion,and a flap portion having first and second flap sections and a groove disposedbetween the firstand second flap sections. The centering mechanism includes an annular ring anda plurality ofspokes extending outwardly from the annular ring. The assemblies are supportedwithin theannular ring which is disposed within the instrument valve housing. The flapportions of theguard members are configured to engage and stretch the septum seal duringreception of asurgical instrument through the valve assembly.
