Discloses a transgenic plant or plant cells that have been transformed with (i) a gene of SEQ ID: No:2 encoding a protein with phosphinothricin acetyltransferase activity that confers herbicide resistance (ii) an optional secondary gene to confer further herbicide resistance (iii) an optional tertiary gene to confer insect resistance (iv) an optional further gene to confer a desired agronomic trait e.g. fungal resistance, stress tolerance, increased yield etc. Further disclosed are methods for genetic engineering of the transgenic cells claimed. A method for controlling weeds based on the herbicide resistance of the claimed transgenic plants is provided.
