A portable light source unit (10, 110) for being coupled to an instrument (46) is provided. The unit (10, 110) includes a housing (12, 112) having a port (18, 118) for receiving a light guide end tip (44) of the instrument (46), a battery (30, 130) and LED (32, 132) mounted within the housing (12, 112), and a pull tab (28, 128) that extends through the housing (12, 112) and electrically isolates the LED (32, 132) from the battery (30, 130). Upon removal of the pull tab (28, 128), an electrical connection is completed between the battery (30, 130) and the LED (32, 132). The unit (10, 110) also includes driver circuitry (34, 134) for the LED (32, 132) ensuring that a constant level of current is provided to the LED (32, 132) so that the LED (32, 132) produces light of a constant brightness.
