PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide compositions comprising ketone bodies and/or metabolic precursors thereof.SOLUTION: Compositions comprising ketone bodies and/or metabolic precursors thereof are suitable for administration to humans and animals and have the properties of, inter alia, (i) increasing cardiac efficiency, in particular, efficiency in use of glucose； (ii) providing energy source in diabetes and insulin resistant conditions； (iii) treating diseases caused by brain cell damages, in particular, delay or prevention of brain damage at the memory-related area as observed in Alzheimer's disease and similar conditions. These compositions may be taken as nutritional aids, for example, for athletes, or for treatment of medical conditions, in particular, conditions related to poor cardiac efficiency, insulin resistance and neuronal damage.
