A topical composition comprising silver sulfadiazine, preferably 0.5wt% to 1.5wt%; an acrylates/beheneth-n methacrylate copolymer wherein n is an integer between 20 and 30, preferably 0.03wt% to 2.0wt%; a surfactant mixture which comprises a sorbitan ester and a sorbital ester (sorbityl ester), wherein the mean number of carbon atoms of the hydrophobe of the sorbitan ester is greater than that of the sorbitol ester, preferably 0.5wt% to 8wt%; and an acceptable diluent or carrier, is provided. Preferably the sorbitan ester is selected from the group including sorbitan cocoate, sorbitan caprate, sorbitan laurate, sorbitan myristate, sorbitan palmitate and sorbitan stearate, in particular sorbitan stearate. Preferably the sorbitol ester is selected from the group including sorbitol cocoate, sorbitol caproate, sorbitol laurate, sorbitol myristate, sorbitol palmitate and sorbitol stearatem in particular sorbitol laurate. The acrylates/beheneth-n methacrylate copolymer is preferably an acrylates/beheneth-25 methacrylate copolymer. Preferably the topical composition is an oil-in-water emulsion wherein the diluent or carrier preferably comprises both an aqueous diluent/carrier and a hydrophobic diluent/carrier. A method of preparing the silver sulfadiazine composition is also provided. The topical silver sulfadiazine composition is preferably a sprayable composition for the prophylaxis, inhibition and/or treatment of infection in wounds, such as severe burn wounds.
