Disclosed are systems and methods for adjusting the height of a portion of a patient support table to suit various types of patients. The patient support table includes a central section movable relative to a first section and a second section located on opposite sides of the central section. A lift mechanism is attached to the support table and raises and lowers the central section relative to the fixed first and second sections. When the central section is in the fully raised position, the patient support platform can be moved in and out of the medical scanning device by the platform drive mechanism. The lift mechanism is housed in a patient support table. The platform drive mechanism can be attached to either the patient support table or the medical scanning device, depending on whether the patient support table is fixed or movable.
