Disclosed is a skin whitening composition using an extract of Sonchus oleraceus, which shows the melanin production inhibitory activity in a concentration-dependent manner when being treated on melanoma cell line B16F10 cells of mice stimulated by &alpha-MSH, which is a melanin production inducer. The extract of Sonchus oleraceus is obtained by using water, ethanol, or a mixed solvent thereof.
