It is noted that choroidal neovascularization is promoted by inflammation in the macular region subretinal, the inventors have developed a drug inhibiting the onset or progression of angiogenesis by angiogenic factors such as VEGF. Specifically, when mice were laser photocoagulation treatment, the administration of anti-IL-6 receptor monoclonal antibody, it was shown that the development of choroidal neovascularization is inhibited.本発明者らは、脈絡膜血管新生が黄斑部網膜下における炎症により促進されることに着目し、VEGFなどの血管新生因子による血管新生の開始または進行を抑制する薬剤の開発を行った。具体的には、レーザー光凝固処置をしたマウスに、抗IL-6受容体モノクローナル抗体を投与することにより、脈絡膜血管新生の発達が阻害されることを明らかにした。
