A system for delivering an electromagnetic field to a patient has a coil 108 to which is applied a constant electrical signal to induce a static magnetic field, and simultaneously an intermittent electrical signal to overlay a pulsing magnetic field. The static magnetic field is stronger than the pulsed magnetic field. A controller 105 has a first output 112 in communication with a first MOSFET switch 107, a second output 113 in communication with a second MOSFET switch 110, and is linked to a power supply 101. Preferably, the static magnetic field has a strength of 20-100 Gauss whilst the variable magnetic field has a strength of 1-10 Gauss and a frequency of 10-500 Hz. The coil may be a closed (figure 2) or open loop coil (figure 3), may be mounted on a bench and may be slidable to treat multiple locations in a patient.
