An animal identification ear tag (100) is disclosed. The tag includes &acy male pin (1) configured to penetrate an animal&rsquos ear. The pin (1) has &acy locking shoulder (5) positioned at one end and &acy blind bore open at the other end. An electronic RFID tag component is arranged in the bore of the male pin and is retained by deformation of the end of the pin after the RFID component is inserted. The deformation may include deforming one or more projections (9) on the male component such as by heat or ultrasonic welding. A female portion (2) of the tag has an opening (6) to receive the male pin (1) including the locking shoulder (5) thereby retaining the tag to the animal&rsquos ear and preventing tampering.
