An air removal device for an intravenous infusion system includes a housing having an inlet for fluid communication with a fluid source, a fluid outlet for fluid communication with a patient's blood vessel, and an air outlet. The air removal device further includes a dividing element disposed in the flow path between the inlet and the fluid outlet in the housing, and an air chamber in fluid communication with the air outlet. The dividing element includes a protrusion that extends across the flow path. The flow path includes a first flow cross-sectional area at the inlet and a second flow cross-sectional area at the protrusion.
