Disclosed is a method of fractionation of sulfated glycan molecules derived from xylan using organic solvent where the steps include: (a) dissolving unfractionated sulfated glycan molecules in solution; (b) adjusting the pH of the solution to make an alkaline solution; (c) performing at least one fractionation cycle by adding organic solvent to the alkaline solution. Also disclosed are the use of the molecules prepared by this method in the manufacturing a medicament for treating non-infective inflammatory diseases, ischaemis, cancer, viral disease, interstitial cystitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, Reiter’s syndrome, a haematoma, a haemorrhoid, frost bite or a burn.
