A smoking substitute system (101) having a fluid inlet (107a), a fluid outlet (108b), an aerosol generator operable to generate an aerosol from an aerosol precursor (104). The aerosol generator is arranged between the inlet (107a) and the outlet (108b) and in fluid communication with each such that fluid may be drawn from the inlet (107a) to the outlet (108b) via the aerosol generator. The system (101) further comprises a source of flavourant (130) provided between the fluid inlet (107a) and the aerosol generator so as to be presented to a flow of fluid from said fluid inlet (107a) towards said aerosol generator, the source of flavourant (130) being substantially thermally isolated from the aerosol generator, and the flavourant (130) comprising one or more substances that activate at least one of an olfactory receptor in a human nasal cavity and a taste receptor in a human oral cavity. Flow of fluid past or through the source of flavourant (130) is effective to release flavourant (130) from said source for entrainment in said fluid upstream of said aerosol generator.
