A surgical stapling device includes an anvil assembly and a shell assemblyhaving a shellhousing including a plurality of shell splines having an A-frameconfiguration. The shellsplines include a triangular tip that defines an apex and is positioned toengage splines on ananvil shaft of the anvil assembly to properly align the anvil assembly withthe shell assembly.The A-frame splines are spaced from each other to define primary channels thataredimensioned to receive the splines of the anvil assembly to properly align theanvil assemblywith the shell assembly. The A-frame splines also define secondary channelsthat arepositioned proximally of and in axial alignment with the apex of the A-framesplines. Insituations in which an apex of the splines on the anvil assembly "crash" intothe apex of theA-frame splines of the shell assembly, i.e., the apexes of the splines meethead on, theA-frame splines of the shell assembly are constructed to fracture to allow thesplines of the anvilassembly to penetrate into the A-frame splines and pass into the secondarychannels of theA-frame splines to properly align the anvil assembly with the shell assemblyof the staplingdevice.
