Within the field of the pharmaceutical conjugation arts, methods are providedforpreparing active carbonate esters of water-soluble polymers that reduce thedegradative effects associated with reactive species often associated withprevioussynthetic approaches. The method relies, at least in part, to consuming one ormore reactive species with a reactive molecule, which may also have theadvantage of being carried out in a "one-pot" process. Also provided are othermethods related to the active carbonate esters of water-soluble polymers, aswellas corresponding compositions.
