The humidifier is comprised of a tub (1) to contain a supply of water (13) an inlet (11) to receive a flow of breathable gas, an outlet (2) connectable to a conduit (4), a wicking element and a heating element (12). The inlet (11) is configured to direct the flow of gas over the supply of water (13) to humidify the flow provided in the tub (1). The heating element (12) extends from upstream of the inlet (11) to downstream of the outlet (2) and is configured to contact the supply of water (13). Methods of providing a flow a breathable gas to a patient interface using the humidifier and disinfecting a respiratory device containing the humidifier are also disclosed.
