The invention relates to a lumbar navigation method. The method comprises the steps of providing a MRI, X-ray or CT image of the lumbar spine of a subject and generating an ultrasound image using an ultrasound imaging device on the lumbar spine of said subject. Further, the method comprises the steps of matching the ultrasound image to the MRI, X-ray or CT image, and relating a pre-specified segment on the MRI, X-ray or CT image to a position of the ultrasound imaging device relative to the lumbar spine of the subject.
