Disclosed is a composition that is suitable for self-tanning, said composition comprising 5 to 30% w/w of a skin tanning agent； 3 to 20% w/w of one or more surfactants； 1 to 20% w/w of one or more delivery agents； 0.1 to 4% w/w of one or more film forming agents； 0.1 to 1% w/w of one or more skin conditioning or soothing agents； 0.1 to 3% w/w of one or more thickeners, preservatives, stabilising agents or combinations thereof； and water. Preferably, the skin tanning agent is dihydroxyacetone (DHA). Most preferably, the surfactant comprises sodium laureth sulphate and cocamidopropyl betaine. Most preferably, the delivery agent comprises both propylene glycol and glycerine. Preferably, the skin conditioning agent is betaine. Preferably, the thickener is sodium chloride, hydroxyethylcellulose or a combination of the two. Also provided is a sunless or self-tanning product comprising the composition and a method of delivering the tanning agent to the skin of a user.
