An apparatus for processing medical images has a receiver 101 for receiving an image representing a characteristic of a part of a human or animal body. The image can be, for example, a magnetic resonance or computed tomography image. Signature unit 103 determines an image-related set of signatures from the first image. The sample store 109 has a database in the form of a set of samples, each sample having a sample related set of signatures and medical data. Matching unit 105 determines a set of matching samples from the set of samples in response to comparing the image related set of signatures to the sample related set of signatures of the set of samples.
