A medical device is disclosed comprising a diaphragm having at least two unidirectional slit valves disposed therein, and a valve housing configured to secure the diaphragm at a peripheral portion of the diaphragm, wherein the slit valves regulate fluid flow to help minimize embolism and health risks associated therewith. One unidirectional slit valve may actuate in a distal direction in response to infusion-induced pressures and remain closed when subjected to aspiration-induced pressures, while another unidirectional slit valve may actuate in a proximal direction in response to aspiration-induced pressures and remain closed when subjected to infusion-induced pressures.
