The present invention relates to a method for removing metal ion impurities such as calcium from a lanthanide metal complex of a macrocyclic chelator. The method uses a scavenger resin that removes metal ions displaced from the chelator by excess lanthanide ions. Also provided is a method for preparing MRI contrast agents from purified lanthanide metal complexes by the addition of a defined excess of chelating agent.
