The surgical system includes a drive unit on the support. The drive unit includes a plurality of output elements arranged to linearly translate the motor or other actuator and the operation of each drive unit into a corresponding one of the output elements. The surgical device has an input subsystem retained at the proximal end of the shaft. The input subsystem includes linearly translatable input elements or pistons. The input and output elements are positioned such that actuation of the actuator linearly translates the output element to cause a linear translation of the corresponding input element. The input element transmits linear motion to a rotary conversion system that converts the linear motion into a rotary motion and transmits the rotary motion to the shaft of the surgical device, thereby causing axial rolling of the surgical device or its distal end effector.
