A membrane oxygenation device comprising a gas-permeable membrane having a first surface and a second surface is provided. The first surface being exposed to blood and the second surface is exposed to an oxygen carrier liquid. In addition, a method for membrane oxygenation is provided.The method comprises the steps of providing a gas-permeable membrane having a first surface and a second surface, exposing the first surface to blood, and simultaneously exposing the second surface to an oxygen carrier liquid.
