PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a linear actuator capable of flattening a bed in emergency.SOLUTION: The linear actuator 10 comprises a shaft 16 having a male screw portion 17, a worm gear speed reduction device for transmitting the rotation of a motor 40 to the shaft 16, a nut 19 threaded to the male screw portion 17 so as to be moved forward/backward with the normal/reverse rotation of the shaft 16, and a movable cylinder 12 fixed to the nut 19 so as to be moved forward/backward relative to a housing 11. It has a sub shaft 52 linked with the worm gear speed reduction device, an inner race 59 spline-joined to the sub shaft 52, an engaging male portion 82 and an engaging female portion 83 provided between the inner race 59 and a collar 55 of the shaft 16 and engageable with each other, an operation ring 66 rotatably fitted to the outer periphery of the housing 11, and an actuation ring 72 for converting the rotation of the operation ring 66 into axial movement and transmitting it to the inner race 59.
