A process for the preparation of R - (+) - 6-carboxamido-3-N-methylamino-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole or a salt or solvate thereof comprising: (a) resolving an enantiomeric mixture of 6 -cyano-3-N-methylamino-1,2,3,4 tetrahydrocarbazole to provide R - (+) - 6-cyano-3-N-methylamino-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole or a salt or solvate of the same； and (b) hydrolysis of R - (+) - 6-cyano-3-N-methylamino-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole or a salt or solvate thereof； optionally followed by salt formation, where the resolution of the enantiomers is achieved by treating the mixture with L-pyroglutamic acidUn procedimiento para la preparación de R-(+)-6-carboxamido-3-N-metilamino-1,2,3,4-tetrahidrocarbazol o una sal o solvato del mismo que comprende: (a) resolver una mezcla enantiomérica de 6-ciano-3-N-metilamino-1,2,3,4 tetrahidrocarbazol para proporcionar R-(+)- 6-ciano-3-N-metilamino-1,2,3,4-tetrahidrocarbazol o una sal o solvato del mismo； y (b) hidrólisis de R-(+)-6-ciano-3-N-metilamino-1,2,3,4-tetrahidrocarbazol o una sal o solvato del mismo； opcionalmente seguida de formación de sal, en donde la resolución de los enantiómeros se consigue tratando la mezcla con ácido L-piroglutámico
