The apparatus may be pointed with an automated pan-and-tilt. It may be targeted by a camera or similar sensor. It can turn its power levels up or down, or off, in response to the data from the sensor. The precision with which the source can be aimed leads to a higher proportion of photons hitting the target than with current heaters.
