FIELD: medicine.SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to medical equipment, specifically to electrically powered surgical cutting and stapling instruments and staples used therein, which are configured for cutting and stapling tissue with staples. Surgical stapling instrument comprises an end effector, a motor and a control system. End effector comprises a plurality of installed staples and a firing element. Motor is configured to actuate the firing element. Motor comprises a primary set of coils and a secondary set of coils. Control system is connected by signals to the motor. Control system comprises a battery, a pulse-width modulation circuit and a switch. Pulse-width modulation circuit is configured to control the duration of the current pulses supplied from the battery to the motor. Switch is configured to switch electric motor between a plurality of operating states. Plurality of operating states includes a first operating state and a second operating state. First operating state in which the primary set of coils is configured to actuate the firing element. Second operating state in which the primary set of coils and the secondary set of coils are configured to actuate the firing element. Motor is configured to generate a first torque value during the first operating state. Motor is configured to generate a second torque value during the second operating state. Second torque value is greater than the first torque value. Motor is configured to actuate the firing element in a first direction during the first operating state. Motor is configured to actuate the firing element in a second direction during the second operating state. Second direction is opposite to the first direction. In the second embodiment, the surgical stapling instrument comprises said end effector, control system and motor. Motor comprises a primary set of coils and a secondary set of coils.
