The present invention includes a composition comprising a compound, such as a 2,4,6-triamino-1,3,5-triazine, 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine, 2,4-diamino-6,7-dihydro-5H-pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine or 2,4-diamino-7H-pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine, that is useful in the treatment of breathing control diseases or disorders in a subject in need thereof. The present invention also includes a method of treating a respiratory disease or disorder in a subject in need thereof, comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of a pharmaceutical composition of the invention.
