Disclosed is crystalline rifaximin polymorphic form Mu having an X-ray powder diffraction comprising peaks, in terms of 2&thetas； (± 0.2), at 4.72, 4.79, 7.84, 8.11, 8.36, 8.55, 8.70, 9.60, and 12.54. Also disclosed is a process for the preparation of polymorphic form Mu as defined above by hydrating rifaximin polymorph Form theta (as described herein) to between 44% and 75% relative humidity (RH). Also disclosed is a method of producing rifaximin polymorph Form Mu comprising fast evaporation of rifaximin from a 1:1 (v/v) ethanol/heptane solution at room temperature, such as by evaporation in a fume hood.
