A bath chair is connected to the lifting mechanism by way of an arm 13 cantilevered from the vertical column of the lifting mechanism, to which it is connected by way of a sleeve 12. The cantilevered arm can be arranged on either the left hand side or the right hand side of the vertical column and has two horizontal parallel bars 16, 17, the topmost of which engages with a hook (10, fig 3) on the rear of the chair seat, the lower bar resting against the back of the chair to help stabilise any rotation in the chair about a horizontal axis. A spring-loaded latch (11, fig 3) secures the hook against accidental disengagement.
