The present invention relates to a modeling element (1) for creating a master geometry which represents a final dental restoration, the modeling element comprising a coronal end (2), an apical end (3), a coupling portion (10) and a modeling portion (20) with an initial shape and dimension. At least part of the modeling portion further comprises an indicator (30) defining the maximum allowable removal of material from the modeling element. The present invention also relates to a method for creating a model of a dental restoration based on such a modeling element.
