The present invention provides sustained release capsule dosage forms of metoprolol succinate in the form of a coating dispersion unit and methods for preparing them. The present invention provides a sustained release capsule dosage form of metoprolol succinate in the form of a coating dispersion unit wherein said capsule dosage form has bioequivalence with a commercially available Toprol-XLO tablet. In addition, sustained release capsule dosage forms containing coated dispersion units can be easily administered to patients who are difficult to swallow tablets or capsules, such as pediatric patients and the elderly, sprinkled over food.
