Disclosed is a process for purifying trifluoromethanesulfinic acid (TFMS) by azeotropically distilling a mixture comprising crude TFMS and an inert aromatic solvent having a boiling point of < 170°C under reduced pressure, and preferably those solvents selected from benzene, fluorobenzene, anisole, trifluoromethylbenzene, toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene, isopropylbenzene or chlorobenzene whereby any trifluoroacetic acid present is removed in the first runnings, and / or wherein any trifluoromethanesulfonic acid present is removed with the bottoms of the distillation. Further disclosed is a process for preparing fipronil which utilises TFMS prepared by the above method.
