PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an endoscope apparatus for variably setting a processing region, where a gradation characteristic is actually changed, in response to the luminance distribution of a subject image.

SOLUTION: The subject image imaged by a CCD 11 is input to a gradation characteristic changing circuit 16 to be subjected to processing to change the gradation characteristic. The actual processing region, where the gradation characteristic is changed, is variably set in response to the luminance distribution of the subject image by increasing/decreasing a lateral size, etc., in a default processing region, so as to allow a ratio N1/N2, between the number N1 of pixels where a luminance value in the default processing region becomes a threshold value or more and the number N2 of pixels where the luminance value becomes a threshold value or less, to be within a reference range.
