Disclosed is an antibody which binds to an epitope located within an extracellular portion of CLDN6 associated with the surface of a cell that expresses CLDN6 and which does not detectably bind to CLDN9 associated with the surface of a cell that expresses CLDN9. Also disclosed is an antibody which binds to CLDN6, wherein the antibody comprises an antibody heavy chain comprising the CDR3 sequence Xaa1 Gly Xaa2 Val Xaa3, wherein Xaa1, Xaa2 and Xaa3 is any amino acid, wherein the antibody does not detectably bind to CLDN9 associated with the surface of a cell that expresses CLDN9. Further disclosed is the use of said antibody in the manufacture of a medicament for treating cancer.
