The bipolar forceps 10 includes a mechanical forceps 20 that includes a pair of jaw members 42 and 44 extending from the distal end 17 and a pair of pivot members 14 having handles 16, 18 disposed at the proximal end 13 to effect movement of the first and second shafts 42, 44, respectively. The disposable housing 70 is configured to releasably engage at least one of the shafts and the electrode assembly 21 is configured to releasably engage the disposable housing 70. The electrode assembly 21 includes electrodes 120, 110 that can be releasably coupled to the jaw members 42, 44. The at least one electrode (120,110) includes a knife channel (58) configured to receive a knife blade (85) for cutting tissue held between the jaw members (42,44).
