A method and system for monitoring the condition of livestock comprises at least one multi-axis accelerometer for sensing changes in orientation and movement of an animals head. Increased activity of said animal is determined from the sensed changes in orientation and movement of said animals head and a plurality of status conditions of the animal is determined on the basis of the detrmined increased activity such as wlaking activity. The status conditions include the prediction of the onset of parturition, fertility status, and oestrus.
