Disclosed herein is a staple cartridge assembly that includes staples. The staple includes features that improve the biocompatibility and / or bioabsorption of the staple. The portion of the staple that is not coated with the bioabsorbable polymer is absorbed at a first rate, while the portion of the staple that is coated with the bioabsorbable polymer is absorbed at a slower rate.
